B6 helps IBS

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is among the more common unexplained medical conditions that afflict people in wealthier countries such as the United States. A new study, published in the academic journal Nutrition Research, suggest that a low intake of vitamin B6 may result in more severe symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

IBS is one of the most common disorders diagnosed by doctors. It is estimated that 10-20% of people experience IBS at some point. It occurs more often in women than in men, and it begins before the age of 35 in about 50% of people.

Irritable bowel syndrome affects your large intestine (colon). Irritable bowel syndrome commonly causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating gas, diarrhea and constipation. Despite these uncomfortable signs and symptoms, IBS doesn’t cause permanent damage to your colon. Most people with IBS find that symptoms improve as they learn to control their condition. Only a small number of people with irritable bowel syndrome have disabling signs and symptoms.

Other natural treatments to help with IBS are:

  • Melatonin
  • Grapefruit seed extractlactase enzyme
  • Vitamin C – ascorbic acid

IBS has no direct effect on life expectancy. It is, however, a source of chronic pain, fatigue, and other symptoms and contributes to work absenteeism. The high prevalence of IBS and significant effects on quality of life make IBS a disease with a high social cost. It has also been suggested that a proportion of IBS patients may develop depression and are thus more likely to commit suicide. Proposed factors for increased suicide rate in IBS patients include perceived hopelessness and poor quality of services.
